As the days shorten and our lives move indoors, it seems a natural time to explore themes of culture, history, religion and how food, art, and music bring us together. Here are upcoming events that have us curious this month…

Weed Pot Invitational at Orcas Paley October 4th - 13th. If you haven’t made it into the charming Orcas Paley in Hillman City, add it to your “to do” list. This show has nothing to do with the marijuana plant and everything to do with beauty and nature. The exhibit explores the form, culture and design heritage of the weed pot: a vessel typically intended to contain a single dried plant stem.

Oysters at the Food Art Collection, opening reception October 6th a group show celebrating our favorite mollusk of the Northwest. This unique apartment gallery is open to the public Sundays from 2-5.

Choir! Choir! Choir! at St. Mark’s Cathedral October 11th. Equal parts singing, comedy, and community-building, the night unfolds like a dream: you get a lyric sheet at the door, DaBu teaches you the vocal arrangement, and a video is recorded of the performance. The current tour is focused on the greatest anthems and the night’s singing will be centered around Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” … come discover the power of singing with others.

Grand opening of the new Burke Museum October 12th With working labs you can see into, one-of-a-kind objects, and galleries filled with curiosity and conversation, it's a new kind of museum. During Grand Opening Weekend, the new Burke Yard outdoor space will be transformed into a festival with multicultural music and dance performances, family-friendly activities, and food trucks.

HOUSEWRIGHT Gallery “Northwest Influencers” through October 26th. a celebration of legendary work from the Northwest School. Northwest School artists were leading influencers, change makers, and pioneers of Modernism on the West Coast.

Timothy Egan October 15th at Town Hall, get first dibs on the Egan’s new book, A Pilgrimage to Eternity at what is sure to be a thought-provoking and fascinating evening.

Madeline Peyroux at Jazz Alley October 17th- 20th Madeline and her trio will be playing songs from the new album Anthem.
